Is a roof leak an emergency? A roof leak is always a major problem, but sometimes you have some time before it becomes serious. However, it is always best to have the leak repaired as soon as possible before it causes serious damage and becomes an emergency. Mike and Sherri W. of Machesney Park, IL had the misfortune of experiencing the latter problem when an existing roof leak caused the drywall in their kitchen ceiling to collapse.
Mike and Sherri immediately knew they'd need the assistance of an experienced roofing contractor and called My-Pros right away. We immediately placed emergency tarping on top of the flat roof in order to keep water away from the leaks. Once the rain stopped and the immediate threat was dealt with, we recommended a mitigation company to dry their property before the roof replacement.
After the home was dried we started our roof replacement by tearing off the existing roof. Much of the plywood was rotted so we replaced this plywood and the chimney framing as well. We then installed a torch down two-ply modified bitumen roof. and repaired the drywall inside of the kitchen as well as opening up the ceiling in the living room so that the homeowner could install a ceiling fan. It took our crew only two days to perform the roof replacement and clean up. Now Mike and Sherri can enjoy the protection of a durable replacement flat roof.
Is a roof leak an emergency? Roof leaks are always a problem although they are sometimes little more than an irritation. However, bad weather can quickly turn a minor irritation into a major disaster which is why you should always repair leaks as quickly as possible. Christopher W. of Loves Park, IL was faced with this exact same question when his roof was leaking in three different places. He made the smart decision and quickly called the experts at My-Pros.
Our pros quickly inspected the home to find the problem. The home had a steep asphalt shingle roof in front and flat roofing in the back and we quickly discovered the flat roof had been improperly installed with a granulated ice and water shield, rather than a proper flat roof membrane. This and the extensiveness of the damage made it clear that a whole roof replacement would be necessary. The siding on the back dormer was also damaged and would need replacement.
After providing a free roof replacement cost estimate and getting Christopher's approval, our team set to work and removed the existing roofing shingles. Once the shingles were removed we installed a synthetic underlayment to protect the home from ice and water. At the same time, our crew removed the existing flat roof and replaced it with a proper flat roofing membrane. They also removed the existing exterior siding on the back dormer and replaced it with new vinyl siding in a lovely shade of blue. Christopher chose CertainTeed Landmark shingles in the color Weathered Wood for a protective, and beautiful, new roof.

Can you lay roofing shingles on top of other shingles? The short answer is yes, provided both shingles are asphalt roofing shingles. This can even be cheaper and faster than tearing off the old roofing to make way for the new. In just one day the full roof replacement was complete and Tom now enjoys a beautiful and protective new asphalt shingle roof.

How long is a roof supposed to last? This depends on the type of roofing material in questions. Some materials like slate and copper can last around half a century (potentially even longer in the case of slate). However, most roofs are made from asphalt shingle roofing which lasts around 15-20 years.
Gary K. of Winnebago, IL had an asphalt shingle roof and he knew it was about at the end of its life at 20 years old. The roof also didn't compliment the color of the brick on his home. Knowing he needed a roofing contractor he could trust, he called My-Pros for a free roof replacement cost estimate.

Our crew worked quickly and the whole roof replacement only took us one day even though it was a 4000 square foot roof. Gary is now happy to have a beautiful replacement roof for a beautiful home!
