My-Pros Case Studies: Roof Replacement in Rochelle, IL

Tuesday, September 5th, 2017 by Joe Boettcher

When you farm for a living and live in a remote location, a leaky roof is the last thing you want to have to worry about. Unfortunately for Joyce G. of Rochelle, IL, her roof had all sorts of problems that desperately needed fixing. For starters, it had three layers of old organic shingles that were severely decaying (not to mention that the building code in that area only allowed for a maximum of two layers on a roof). The roof was also underventilated, which was causing the upstairs bedrooms to overheat during the hot summer days. Throw in the fact that the chimney and pipe vents were improperly flashed, the roof had no ice and water shield, and the underlayment it did have was antiquated, and it's easy to see why Joyce called My-Pros requesting a complete roof renovation. And we were more than happy to help her out!

For a case like Joyce's, in which the entirety of the roofing system is so utterly out-of-date, the best way to approach the job is to strip the system down and start from scratch. That's what we did by first tearing off the old roof and then examining the plywood decking to make sure it was sound. Once we'd thoroughly inspected the decking and made sure there were no signs of damage or decay, we began by giving her chimneys and pipe vent the proper flashing they deserved. We then installed ice and water shield per code along the eaves and valleys and CertainTeed RoofRunner synthetic underlayment across the entirety of the decking. Joyce's roof now had all of the secondary ice and water protection it could ever possibly need, but we weren't done yet!

The next step was adding eight new box vents (four on the upper roof and four on the lower roof) to get rid of the warm air congregating in the upstairs bedrooms and allow Joyce to sleep in peace at night. After that, we installed a beautiful CertainTeed Landmark Pewter architectural shingle to make Joyce's roof look as good as new. And not only does it look good, but because we installed each shingle with six nails, the roof will be able to withstand wind gusts up to 130 mph. This is especially useful for Joyce because those winds can get pretty gusty out in the country!

All of this was completed within only a few days to accommodate Joyce's busy schedule, and she couldn't have been more thrilled with the results. Likewise, we are happy we were able to give Joyce the complete roof replacement she so desperately needed. On top of that, we were also able to help the environment by recycling all of the old shingles from Joyce's roof. Great jobs like this are the reason we love roofing!
